The Intruder is in Jail, and I Still Can't Cook

No snarky comments about my cooking skills...I meant that our kitchen isn't finished :)

Funny how our kitchen remodel turned into a house remodel. It's a pain in the neck now, but I'm going to love it when it's all beautiful.

Family Room

The foyer into the kitchen and family room is blocked off, so we have to go up the stairs, through the bedrooms and down the stairs on the other side of the house to get to ours and Eric's room. The boxes keep the dogs from going upstairs

Kitchen

I love our new island :)

We've been moved to the living room until the family room is finished. Then this room will be re-done

Larry and I went to the bond reduction hearing for the 24-year-old heroin addict who came into our house and three others and stole purses and credit cards and expensive silver sets (which he sold to a pawn shop). The kid's dad, an attorney, was at the hearing, as was our neighbor - also a victim - and apparently they knew each other socially. After shaking hands and saying hello, the dad said, "Wait, I have a bad feeling here....are you one of the victims?" Our neighbor said, "Yes I am." The dad apologized, said a few more words and left. I can't imagine how he must feel.

The bailiff brought in about 15 prisoners in handcuffs and shackles. We got to listen to each case, which was only about 5 minutes. The kid in our case didn't stand in front of the judge. His attorney and the prosecuting attorney stood up there and talked quietly so we couldn't hear much. His bond reduction was denied, though, because of a prior forgery charge for which he was on probation when he committed these felony burglaries.  I heard the attorney say to the dad outside afterwards, "Well it's not like he broke into the houses or anything; the doors were unlocked." Oh, so that makes it okay to go in and steal people's belongings and use their credit cards and sell their things to a pawn shop????

I feel torn because I know it's not okay for him to do what he did, but the kid obviously needs help, and the best place for him to be is in jail. Larry said, "Didn't he know he would go to jail for doing this?" I promise he wasn't thinking about that; he was only thinking about how to get money for his next high.

I wish I could have taken his picture. He looked like a regular private high school kid. He looked so out of place compared to the others.  He didn't look strung out. He didn't have tattoos all over. His head wasn't shaved. He looked like a nice kid who probably tried heroin one time and got hooked. His poor family. Our friend's son went to high school with him. Apparently he got kicked out of high school and has been a problem ever since.

It's unlikely we'll get our things back. The prosecuting attorney's office will keep us informed of court dates and proceedings. I believe his court date is at the end of December or beginning of January.

And life goes on!

Basketball Season...Finally

DeSmet's first games were part of a M/W/F tournament, so my dad and sister came from California to watch E play.

E during warm ups - too bad it's blurry

I think this cameraman was from Channel 5

Tip off against Cameron Biedschied (Notre Dame commit)

E is 2 for 2 on tip offs :)

I love this pic.  If I take enough during a game, a few always turn out
