A Little Whine With That Cold?

Larry has a cold.

And everyone knows it.

L: {Cough cough} I can't believe how bad this cold is. {Hack hack} I am sooooo sick. {Sniffle sniffle} I'd better call the doctor. Something is seriously wrong.

Me: I know how you feel. I had the same thing.

L: You did?! When?

Me: Right before you got it.

L: You did not.

Me: Yah. I did.

L: But it wasn't this bad. I've had this for a week.

Me:  Yes. It was. And I had it for three weeks.

L:  Really?  Huh...I don't remember you being sick at all.

Me:  I know...'cause I didn't whine about it.

L:  Oh.

Eighteen Years Ago...the Greatest Gift

Eighteen years ago...

I was given the greatest gift

Today he becomes an adult

Responsible for himself

A contributor to society

And someday the world (live big, dream bigger)

Be kind to him, World

He's a good kid

And I love him deeply

Dearly

He's yours now

But I'll always be there for him

When he needs me

The Intruder is in Jail, and I Still Can't Cook

No snarky comments about my cooking skills...I meant that our kitchen isn't finished :)

Funny how our kitchen remodel turned into a house remodel. It's a pain in the neck now, but I'm going to love it when it's all beautiful.

Family Room

The foyer into the kitchen and family room is blocked off, so we have to go up the stairs, through the bedrooms and down the stairs on the other side of the house to get to ours and Eric's room. The boxes keep the dogs from going upstairs

Kitchen

I love our new island :)

We've been moved to the living room until the family room is finished. Then this room will be re-done

Larry and I went to the bond reduction hearing for the 24-year-old heroin addict who came into our house and three others and stole purses and credit cards and expensive silver sets (which he sold to a pawn shop). The kid's dad, an attorney, was at the hearing, as was our neighbor - also a victim - and apparently they knew each other socially. After shaking hands and saying hello, the dad said, "Wait, I have a bad feeling here....are you one of the victims?" Our neighbor said, "Yes I am." The dad apologized, said a few more words and left. I can't imagine how he must feel.

The bailiff brought in about 15 prisoners in handcuffs and shackles. We got to listen to each case, which was only about 5 minutes. The kid in our case didn't stand in front of the judge. His attorney and the prosecuting attorney stood up there and talked quietly so we couldn't hear much. His bond reduction was denied, though, because of a prior forgery charge for which he was on probation when he committed these felony burglaries.  I heard the attorney say to the dad outside afterwards, "Well it's not like he broke into the houses or anything; the doors were unlocked." Oh, so that makes it okay to go in and steal people's belongings and use their credit cards and sell their things to a pawn shop????

I feel torn because I know it's not okay for him to do what he did, but the kid obviously needs help, and the best place for him to be is in jail. Larry said, "Didn't he know he would go to jail for doing this?" I promise he wasn't thinking about that; he was only thinking about how to get money for his next high.

I wish I could have taken his picture. He looked like a regular private high school kid. He looked so out of place compared to the others.  He didn't look strung out. He didn't have tattoos all over. His head wasn't shaved. He looked like a nice kid who probably tried heroin one time and got hooked. His poor family. Our friend's son went to high school with him. Apparently he got kicked out of high school and has been a problem ever since.

It's unlikely we'll get our things back. The prosecuting attorney's office will keep us informed of court dates and proceedings. I believe his court date is at the end of December or beginning of January.

And life goes on!

Basketball Season...Finally

DeSmet's first games were part of a M/W/F tournament, so my dad and sister came from California to watch E play.

E during warm ups - too bad it's blurry

E and Mike Asleson doing their handshake for the starting lineup announcement

I think this cameraman was from Channel 5

After DeSmet won their first game

Starting lineup announcements - Game 2 against Cardinal Ritter (Wed)

Tip off against Cameron Biedschied (Notre Dame commit)

E is 2 for 2 on tip offs :)

I love this pic.  If I take enough during a game, a few always turn out

Here are some DeSmet-related links from the Post Dispatch:

Pick a Number...

Forty-two (42) has always been Eric's favorite number

I don't know when that started or why

So when it was time for the players to choose jerseys for this season

And the highest number available was 30

In honor of his grandfather...

Eric picked 25

After practice the other day Eric's coach invited the team to his house for breakfast. When they got there he told them some really cool news...The team will be flying to Washington, D.C. on February 12th to play another team.  They're excited. I don't know any details about who they're playing or how long they'll be there, but I know it's just one game.  Hmmmm...I'll have to check my schedule for that date. I love D.C.

In case you didn't know, Eric's first game is November 28th!  Here's the schedule:  DeSmet Varsity Basketball.  I already have strict instructions from my bossy, much older brother to obtain game tapes of every game and Fed Ex them overnight.

We Got Robbed

I hate learning lessons the hard way.

Here's what I learned this week:

Lesson 1: Even though we live in a nice, secluded neighborhood, burglars are everywhere and we need to lock our door (I know...duh)

Three days ago, at 12:30 in the morning, someone came through our unlocked sliding glass door. The dogs barked like crazy and woke me up. When I came out to shut them up, I could tell something was wrong because they wouldn't stop barking. KC was behind the couch, shaking. At first I thought there must have been raccoons eating out of the trash bag on the table outside and that's what they were barking at. I thought it was strange, though, that for 10 minutes the dogs sniffed the carpet and sniffed the air. They barked for another 20 minutes no matter what I did. I finally woke Larry up and said, "I think somebody's in the house...the dogs are going crazy." He lifted his head, mumbled something, and went back to sleep. I slept on the couch with the dogs the rest of the night because they were so freaked out.

The next morning I got ready to leave the house and couldn't find my purse. I called Larry and asked if he'd seen it. It took all of 2 seconds to put everything together and realize we'd been robbed.

Lesson 2: Make copies of everything in your wallet in case your purse is lost or stolen.
Canceling credit cards is much easier when you know which cards were in your wallet in the first place. When you have photo copies you'll have not only the customer service phone numbers to call, but the account numbers as well. I had done this once 15 years ago but hadn't done it since.
For the past two days I've been closing my bank account (my checkbook was in my wallet), putting a stop payment on checks, and getting a social security card (never had one for some reason), which you need in order to get another driver's license, which you need in order to open another bank account.

Lesson 3: Don't save gift cards...spend them! Larry had just given me $100 Starbucks gift card for my birthday. Gone. Not that I'd have been able to spend $100 on lattes in 6 days, but I could have at least tried.

Lesson 4: When your house is burglarized tell your neighbors. You might save them from a similar fate. Two of our neighbors directly to our right were robbed the night before. If we'd known, we would have been more diligent about locking our doors.

Lesson 5: Don't buy expensive purses. (But I LOVED my Cole Haan purse!)

Enough said.

I wasn't the only one who learned a lesson...

Larry learned he needs to lock his car.  His expensive prescription sunglasses were stolen from his car in the driveway.

And Eric learned to sleep with a bat next to his bed.

Postscript

The police took a report and dusted for fingerprints. Nada. But it doesn't matter because they already know who did it...it's a white guy in his late 20s who lives on one of the lanes behind us (easy access through the woody trails in our backyard), and is a heroin addict.

He took my purse at 12:30 a.m., used my credit card at a gas station at 2:00 a.m. and a Starbucks at 8:25 a.m. He obviously didn't know to use the Starbucks gift card that couldn't be traced. The police are going to review the surveillance video from the gas station from 2:00 a.m. that matches the amount spent on my card. That's what they did for our neighbor's burglary and that's how they know who did it. There is a warrant out for his arrest. The cops know where he lives and what kind of car he drives. They haven't found him yet, but it's only a matter of time.

So...

What did you learn today?

Things to do When Your House is Remodeled

People react differently when their house is being remodeled.

Kitchen - Day 1

To keep from going crazy while our house is being remodeled, for example, Larry goes to the garage and works on his car

Kitchen - Day 2

I just leave the state entirely and drive Eric to Belmont University, in Nashville, for an official visit

When we get back, everything from the kitchen is still in the family room

Kitchen - Day 3

Stella is sick of it already

I head to Stray Rescue to walk dogs

(This is Sir Didymus - I think he got adopted already)

I also celebrate my birthday by going to lunch on a gorgeous day

and show off my birthday flowers and cute paw print socks

Later we go out to dinner

The wallpaper-less foyer!!!  Can you believe it?

After Larry fixes his car, he doesn't know what to do with himself

So he buys another one

And Eric just keeps playing basketball

That's what we do when the kitchen is being remodeled

Kitchen window is installed! - Day 4

Okay, obviously that was just a silly way to share some pictures :)

I wanted to share, too, that Nolan Berry's mom Meg and I are going to write a short blog for the Creve Coeur Patch talking about life as a basketball mom.  I thought we'd call it Hoop-lah!

I'll let you know when we write our first post.

I can't tell you how excited I am for basketball season!
